Chapter 4
Charles Wendell Lusher was born in Crown City, Ohio on December 1, 1914 to John Russell Lusher and Susan Damaris McClaskey Lusher. He graduated from Mercerville High School in 1932 and then attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia for two years before transferring to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1936. He taught school in Tuscarawas, Ohio for one year before attending Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky for two years where he received a Bachelor of Theology degree. He was married to Gladys Pauline Sheets on June 7, 1939 and God blessed their union with four sons: Stanley David, Charles Daniel, James Phillip and John Henry. During the 1937-1939 years he served as a circuit preacher for seven rural churches in Gallia County. In 1939 he accepted the position as pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chillicothe, Ohio where he served until 1943 when he enlisted as an Army Chaplain to help young soldiers who were so desperately in need of spiritual counsel as they faced death. Following chaplaincy training at Harvard University, he served in England and France as Chaplain to the 438th Troop Carrier Group, 53rd Wing, 9th Air Force, which led the invasion of Normandy for nearly two years. After the war he attended Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois for two years where he received a Master of Theology degree. Upon his return to Ohio, he once again served the rural churches of Gallia County for three years before accepting a call to the First Baptist Church in Painesville, Ohio (1949-1957). In 1957 he returned for a second pastorate at Tabernacle Baptist in Chillicothe (19567-1967). He subsequently served as the State Evangelist for the Ohio Baptist convention, as Minister at Large for the OBC, and as pastor of Calvary Baptist, Rio Grande, Ohio before returning once again to Tabernacle Baptist, Chillicothe for a third time. He also served Salem Baptist, Gage, Ohio and Beulah Baptist in Proctorville, Ohio. He also led eleven different tours of the Holy Land. Following the death of his wife Gladys on August 8, 1987, he was married to Dixie Lee Mylum. They faithfully served the lord until her passing on November 29, 1998. He is survived by his four sons and daughter-in-laws, a step son and a step daughter and their families, by 10 grandchildren and by one sister, Mrs. Eleanor Shafer of Glenford, Ohio.
