Introduction

A Word of Encouragement: We are living in an age in which we are increasingly being divested of our opportunities for self-expression which, in times past, were a part of daily life. A large percentage of our nation’s population labors to manufacture goods which were conceived and designed by others. We are surrounded by things made by someone we have never heard of, at a place we have never seen. We are, in a sense, shrinking cogs in a machine which thrives on the delegation of responsibility, and the hoarding of authority.

As a home decorator, employee, retiree, or volunteer, you may have pangs of frustration as part of your daily work diet and that your life cover is about to break. Your creative talents and drives seem to be hemmed in by factors which you can’t control. Be that true or not, accept the fact that every human being has an inborn sense of creativity which can be developed and nurtured to the benefit of the individual and the cause served. If, by chance, you find yourself in a position where you may have opportunities to participate in the conception and creation of displays and exhibits, take heart; this is your chance to explore and develop your creativity and have a good time in the process. This presentation is designed to help you get into and through the display-making process, using wet-mounting procedures you can do, regardless of how limited your background on the subject may be. This information will take you over the rough spots and through the dark shadows. So, crank up your courage and read on!

As we begin talking about the creation of display projects, using wet-mounting materials and techniques, what are we really talking about? Our art resources include 1) good quality art prints of any size, 2) valued historic black a white (B&W), and some colored (possibly fading) color photos from earlier decades, contained in boxes and folders in your possession, 3) more current B&W and color photos (most of them printed on non-water absorbent resin coated [RC] paper).

Before you move on to the information/instructional materials involved in this presentation, please take a few minutes to browse through some examples of work you can do to document and decorate with materials from your own history, interests, and collections. Click here to go to the Display Review pages and then return here to proceed with your review and search for answers.

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed and were stimulated by what you saw and that you will be increasingly encouraged to create displays that are meaningful and useful to you, your family and associates. Click here to move on to the Wet-Mounting Procedures and Techniques Table of Contents.

Information and ideas advocated in this presentation are based upon research, writing and publication of a self-help guide entitled “CHARNELL’s Guide to Affordable Exhibits and Programs” and are published here by Chuck and Nell Stone, the Guide's authors.
