I was flying as a photojournalist with Charlie Alfrod's group of B-17's, coming back from a costly raid on Schweinfurt . Just as we got over the English Channel, the thickest fog I had ever seen instantly greeted us. It occurred to me that how ironic it would be to survive Schweinfurt
and then have a mid-air in that fog.
