THE KERRIN H. COYNE STORY

OF THE

98TH BOMB WING CREW # 74

Introduction

Kerrin H. Coyne, Tail Gunner, 98th Bomb Wing Crew # R-74 has offered his story of their combat crew experience in training and operations from Yokota Air Base in 1952, culminating in a bailout at 600 feet during takeoff with a full load of bombs. I am pleased to share his story with our reconnaissance oriented web site audience because of the interconnecting and interdependent relationships that existed during the Korean War between the Yokota AB bomber and reconnaissance organizations.

It is worth noting that the name Douglas Hassing, Navigator, turns up in the evolution of this story which follows the RB-29 shootdown and search mission stories in another part of this web site. The first crew photo shown in this presentation represents the original crew # R-74. You will note that the story reflects some departures and additions of crew members leading up to the final bailout episode. That crew photo, relating to the fatal crash outlined in the latter part of the story, is included as part of that section.

Our sincere thanks to Kerrin Coyne for this information and companion illustrations. If any of our viewers wish to be in touch with Kerrin, please send me an e-mail (see e-mail notes on home page) and I will try and help you connect.
