CHAPTER #5

TIME FOR REFLECTION

Late in 1993, retirement seemed to be an attractive alternative to the hectic pace of travel and meetings that I was committed to and I submitted my retirement papers to our corporate headquarters and soon after joined the ranks of the unemployed in December of that year. In order to stay somewhat active and to pursue a long interest in general history I enrolled in the graduate school of the University of North Carolina. One course led to another and after the required curriculum was completed I received a Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a heavy concentration in 20th Century history. Eleanor and I have two grown children. Our son Jay and his wife Cheryl live and work in the Atlanta area with their two boys, Aaron and Cailen. Our daughter Janice lives nearby in Greensboro and is currently enrolled in graduate school working on an advanced degree in public history.

Retirement has proved to be an interesting period of our lives. Our time is occupied by a routine of exercise, maintaining our home, reading and a generous amount of travel both in the United States and in foreign countries. Probably the best part is waking in the morning and deciding what sounds interesting for the day, and then doing it.
