Series Slide — 68

Real-time, real-life, photo documentation.

This photograph was taken by the Photo Navigator, shown in Slide 67. The picture records his RB-29 Aircraft Commander’s reaction to news that the #3 engine was on fire, just as the aircraft lifted off the runway at Yokota Air Base, Japan, in early 1954.

For the record, the engine was shut down, the prop feathered, the fire extinguished, and the aircraft made a safe emergency landing.

No time for composition here. Just point and shoot, recording whatever one can.
