Photo entitled
“Little Brother”

This photograph records
a chance meeting on a
Japanese rural mountain
trail. It is a memorable
photo for the photographer
for a number of reasons.
It typifies the American
photographer’s collective encounters with the
Japanese civilian popula-
tion during the 1953/54
time period.

The photo is special
because the blurred back-
ground, caused by the
shallow depth of field
setting, is almost totally
absent of detail. This
permits full attention on
the details of the brother
and sister combination.
