Aircraft named “High and Lonesome”

From 5 April until 8 August 1952, the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron, of the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, home based at Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico, was on routine deployment in the United Kingdom on project, “Round Out”. Initially flying out of the Royal Air Force Base at Sculthorpe, the squadron relocated, on 15 May to the RAF base at Upper Heyford. During this deployment, the squadron engaged in the Peacetime Airborne Reconnaissance Program known as, “PARPRO”. Electronic intelligence and photographic reconnaissance missions were flown over the Baltic Sea, within the Berlin air corridors, and other areas of interest near the periphery of East Bloc states. These flights, restricted to distances no closer than 40 miles of the Soviet border, were of 12 to 15 hours duration.

On 8 August, the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron returned to oour home base at Ramey AFB, knowing that the 55th Wing would soon be involved in a PCS move to Forbes Air Force base, Kansas. Upon our arrival the flight crews and personnel soon found themselves busy packing, arranging for the shispment of household goods, vehicles, wives, children, etc.; for the projected move.

As things turned out, our crew would not be moving with the rest of the Wing, but would join the Wing at Forbes AFB, at a later date.
