Recollections of an RB-29 crew in Japan

Pre-Boarding Inspection and Checks

Our aircraft is checked and made ready to go. We have a few minutes free time to relax, have a cup of coffee and make a last pre-departure potty stop. As we continue with this presentation, you have no doubt already noted that we are wearing various types of flight suits, depending upon the weather. Keep in mind that these photos were collected on a variety of missions over a time of changing seasons. This gives you an opportunity to see the various methods we used to keep warm enough for in-flight duties and remain prepared to deal with emergency conditions.

L to R: Merle, Dick, Bob and Chuck share a few stories as they relax a bit before boarding.

L: Sam Farley, preflight complete,
ready to roll.

R: Fred checks and adjusts Bob’s
harnesses for a better fit.

Merle adjusts footgear prior to final
inspection and briefing.

Last cup. Time to get serious.

Final inspection & briefing - Cold weather survival suits are in order for this mission

Take-off time is approaching, it’s time for the final group briefing and inspection. A passenger was frequently assigned to fly with us, for various reasons, by our Operations Director. This was a time to make sure that the crew and the individual was properly equipped and briefed regarding routine and emergency procedures that might arise. Most passengers rode in the front cockpit and used an isle-stand seat located behind and between the two pilot’s positions.

It is time to board the aircraft and fire up.
