Recollections of an RB-29 crew in Japan

Preflight - Walk-Around Inspection

Every crew member had walk-around check responsibilities. Day or night, a flashlight was an important tool to do a thorough inspection.
When potential problems were discovered, the aircraft crewchief was always available for consultation.
Inspecting the RB-29 tailskid hydraulic system.
While each crew-member had their own responsibilities, any problem discovered brought the collective knowledge of all present air and ground crew-members into play.
Where possible, minor repairs and fluid leaks were fixed with available tools.
When more serious problems were encountered, the squadron and base maintenance facilities were available on short notice to give us a hand to get the mission off on time with safety first at the top of the priority list.
