On April 30, 1944, during the second day of the Truk attack on Moen Airfield, Bill Linn had one bomb hang-up on him during his initial run, but he desperately wanted one more chance to really knock out that airstrip. With two enemy fighters in the area, he quickly made his second run and pounded it home with a successful release. Before he could rendezvous with the squadron, the first Jap fighter came at him but he successfully damaged him with accurate machine gun fire, and then was able to avoid the second one through evasive maneuvering of his Avenger.

Fred Gwynn had his problems that day, too. After getting separated from his squad, he found himself over Param Island, getting the worst 3-inch shelling he had ever seen. He thought he had had it, but was able to push his Avenger’s powerful engine and escape up into a cloud and at 135 knots! A half hour later he spotted 5 TBF’s disappearing in dives on Dublon Navy Yard, so he tried to catch up with them but ended up making a lone dive with terrific heavy, medium and light AA bearing on him. He was able to drop 2 bombs however, for a nice hit on some buildings and further north was able to knock out more buildings with the remaining 2 bombs.
