The Clarence Freeman Photo Collection

The Freeman photos that are displayed in these Chapters 2 and 3 Addendums to this story were largely taken while Clarence Freeman was based at Gray Field, Ft. Lewis Washington. Many of the photos were taken on Gray Field and adjacent Ft. Lewis grounds. Selected photos were taken at other locations where the 91st Observation Squadron was participating in field exercises or at other locations involving their work, such as aircraft accidents, and related activities. Photos referred to in the Chapter 3 Addendum were taken later after the organization transferred to the east coast as US involvement in WW II was becoming immanent. Keep in mind that the photographers, usually Clarence, had primary interests in the maintenance and repair of their assigned aircraft. The photos presented here will be largely from their perspective within the overall operation of the unit. We will strive to sort this all out as we present these materials; but, realize that some assumptions and guesstimates have been made in an effort to organize and caption the pictures.

We will begin by showing some key people, places and aircraft involved in the 91st Observation Squadron operations during this point in time.
