Enjoying the services of a U.S. Military shuttle bus from the Nikko Kanko Hotel, we have arrived at the Nikko Shrines. The long and complex histories of each Shrine element we encountered pose a challenge for serious interpretation after more than 46 years. Using a few related publications, I will offer limited commentary, where it seems safe and appropriate, so as not to confuse the facts.

We first encounter a Buddhist style gate, which is called ?Nio-mon?. There are two guardians watching visitors in the niches. One is opening his mouth and the other, closing his mouth. The former means “Heaven” and the latter, “Earth”. They are keeping out the evil spirits between heaven and earth.
