These are wings on either side of the gate. As I recall, they were used for storage for seasonal celebration and parade regalia.
Each individual panel is a remarkable work of art in its own right. Maintaining these artifacts is a non-stop process that will go on for the entire lifespan of this remarkable collection of shrine structures. |

This is the Third Shogun’s mausoleum, called Taiyubyo. It is much more simple and unadorned than his grandfather’s mausoleum, the Toshogu Shrine. It was built in 1651. |
