These are wings on either side of the gate. As I recall, they were used for storage for seasonal celebration and parade regalia.

Each individual panel is a remarkable work of art in its own right. Maintaining these artifacts is a non-stop process that will go on for the entire lifespan of this remarkable collection of shrine structures.

This is the Third Shogun’s mausoleum, called Taiyubyo. It is much more simple and unadorned than his grandfather’s mausoleum, the Toshogu Shrine. It was built in 1651.
