Korean War Reactivation

“Time passed swiftly and the so-called Korean Police Action became front page news. I soon received a letter telling me to report to the Federal Building in Minneapolis for a physical. I passed and was given one month to get organized before I had to report for active duty.”

“I had a good boss at the mill. He gave us two weeks of additional pay because he knew it would be a while before my Army pay kicked in. At the time they needed Airborne men badly in Korea. I shouldn't have been called up. I was married and had two children with a third on the way. They bypassed all of that. They saw I was former Airborne and I was called up.”

“So it was back in the service on September 26, 1950. I was a lot smarter this time around. I knew what I was in for. After four weeks of training at Fort Lewis, Washington, I was shipped to Korea with the 187th Combat Team under the 11th Airborne.”

“I made two more jumps which I didn't really care to do. Things were different now. I was a husband and a father. When we arrived in Korea, we were issued coats, rifles, but no ammunition. I couldn't figure that out and it was colder than hell.”

“While I was in Korea, my wife was working on the homefront to secure my early release from the Army. On May 14, 1951, I received a hardship discharge. As a civilian, once again, I returned to my job at the Glencoe Mills. By this time there was a new manager in place who docked my wages for the two weeks I had been paid when reactivated into the Army. A great welcome home.”

“Rosa and I eventually added two more children to our family — for a total of five. After 19 1/2 years with Glencoe Mills, I worked for a time for Rutz Plumbing and then for the Glencoe School District. I retired in 1986 after serving as a custodian for 22 1/2 years.”
