Speed's daughter, Barbara Rosebrock, shares thoughts regarding their family:

“As for our immediate family military history I think it is really impressive. Dad's info you already have. Their were 5 children of this marriage.

  • Barbara — Married, her husband, who spent 2 years in Army, was stationed 1 year in VietNam. They have a son who is currently 30 years old. He went into the Air Force right after graduation and now has 12 years in and plans to make it to his 20 years before retirement (God willing).
  • Robert — Went into the Navy right after graduation. He served his country for 4 years as a cook. He also served in VietNam.
  • James — Retired with 20 years in the Air Force. He worked with loading bombs on the planes. He was worked in top security in both NORAD and at Nellis in Las Vegas where he was flown to work every morning and home most nights. His whole family had to be debriefed just in case he were to talk in his sleep etc. He spent time in Alaska and Viet Nam also.
  • Michael — Retired with 20 years in the Air Force. He worked with the computer systems on the B-2 Bombers. He served mainly stateside but did have a TDY to England. Mike met his wife, Gina, while she was serving her tour in the USAF.
  • Patrick — Served the Navy for 4 years and retired from the Air Force after 20 years. He was deployed twice to the Persian Gulf. He spent 8 years stationed in England. They have 3 daughters, his youngest one just graduated from HS in May and entered Basic Training for the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in August, 2003. She is hoping to train for the Military Police Canine Division.”

Patrick speaks about his Dad and their family:

“There isn't a lot to tell about Dad's military career. He didn't talk much to me about it. The only thing I really remember is how he was rescued by a woman, who was in charge of a Russian tank group. The only reason I chose the military was my brothers all chose to enter after school. I don't know if that was because Dad or not.”

“I chose the Navy first because Dad and Hart were Army, Bob chose the Navy, Jim and Mike chose the Air Force. This way it was two Army, two Navy and two Air Force. I got out of the Navy after four years and went back home to live with Dad and Mom, who were still working at the schools. I felt I wasn't going anywhere so, I decided to reenter the military but this time it was to keep my feet on solid ground in the Air Force. Dad has done a few more speeches about what had happened during his service career, after I had moved away. These were typically for Veteran's Day and speeches at the VFW meetings.”

“When Mom and Dad came over to see me in England, we went over to where his plane was shot down and visited with a few people that remembered where his plane went down and where a stone marker was placed at the Memorial. You could see the hurt in Dad's eyes when he remembered some of the names. We also visited a place where he was taken after they were captured. Dad remembered some of that too.”

Patrick and his Dad visit the Market Garden battle memorial.

“When I was growing up Dad didn't say much about being captured. I think it was because it still hurt him to think of his friends that didn't make it back.

Love, Bro #4, Patrick”

In due time, we may accumulate more input from family members; but, from what we see here, the Homan family has produced some really great citizens for the good old USA.
